Ascend 205 Rockaway Parkway - Public Assembly Emergency Lighting

Ascend Charter Schools are a network of schools located in Brooklyn that focus on educating the community through engaging and comprehensive curricula. These schools use the Responsive Classroom model to provide thorough, research-based education.

Ascend schools are built on a foundation of diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism (DEIA) principles, and strive for a stronger, more just community.

The Brooklyn Ascend Charter Elementary School at 205 Rockaway Parkway in Brownsville was Ascend’s first school, opened in 2008. The school needed to create a functional public assembly space, able to safely accommodate over 75 people at once, on the 2nd floor in the cafeteria. EP Inspections and Commissioning was hired to conduct the “Public Assembly Emergency Lighting” TR1 progress inspection to ensure that the emergency lighting conformed with the requirements of the 1968 Code and Local Law 5 of 1979. This local law calls for at least 5 foot candles of illumination at the floor level near exit doors, that no area along the paths of egress have an intensity of illumination of less than 2 foot candles at a height of 18 inches off the ground, and that all other areas are above 1 foot candle in illumination. Additionally, all exit signs must be installed in accordance with the plans. All areas of the space passed these requirements and now the students can safely enjoy their cafeteria.
